Born and raised in New Paltz, NY, Lori embarked on her artistic journey by earning a Cosmetology license from a Vidal Sassoon school in Rockland County after graduation. Not only is Lori licensed in hairstyling, but she also proudly co-owns Concept 1 Hair Salon, a family business successfully operated by Lori's mother since 1969.
In the early '90s, Lori had the fortune of meeting her friend and mentor, the immensely talented and renowned Pat Sinatra. Pat played a pivotal role in guiding Lori through her art career, taking her under her wing and imparting the sacred art of tattooing. Her influence extended across all realms of art, and together they collaborated for nearly three decades. Upon Pat's retirement, she inspired Lori to establish her own studio space in New Paltz, NY, which led to the creation of Magickal Marks.
Lori's artistic roots run deep. As a child, she was profoundly influenced by her grandfather, an art restorer and self-taught master oil painter, and her father, an artist who immigrated from Estonia to America during WWII. Lori fondly recalls spending countless hours observing her grandfather as he painted, restored artworks, and even identified forgeries for the FBI. These moments, although Lori now regrets not asking more questions, were invaluable and deeply cherished.
On Lori's mother's side, her uncle, an artist and art teacher on Long Island, NY, has been a constant source of influence and support for both Lori and her art. His encouragement and guidance have been instrumental in shaping her artistic path.
In the early 2000s, Lori deepened her understanding of color and composition under the tutelage of Andrew Lattimore, an accomplished master oil painter from Cornwall, NY. A fellow student, Roseanne Cerbro, became a close friend with whom Lori continues to share art techniques and insights. Lori's involvement with the Barrett Art Center, where she served on the Board for two years alongside her friend Ellen O’Shea, furthered her exploration of art history and introduced her to the world of the Impressionists.
Currently, Lori is actively engaged with artists and educators at the Woodstock School of Art, where she is on a diligent quest to discover her unique artistic style. Lori's daily practice includes painting animals, trees, landscapes, and people, embracing all facets of nature. She draws inspiration from a diverse array of artists, including Delacroix, Goya, Levitan, Fechin, Sargent, Rubens, Caravaggio, and da Vinci.
Persistently studying oils, Lori is now venturing into the world of abstraction, continuously expanding her artistic horizons. Through her work, she aims to evoke emotion and wonder, inviting viewers to see the world through her eyes.
